MEP Kukan on adoption of the 2016 Report on Albania and 2016 Report on Bosnia and Herzegovina

Following yesterday’s debate in the European Parliament and today’s vote on the 2016 Report on Albania and 2016 Report on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Eduard Kukan (EPP/SK), Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, made the following comments:

“I am glad to see Albania´s continuous progress in the EU integration. I hope this trend will continue and we will be able to set date for opening the accession negotiations soon. The political consensus leading to adoption of the justice reform was an important step in this process. I believe that its implementation will significantly strengthen citizens’ faith to judiciary and rule of law. We support this process and the International Observation Mission, which is overseeing the implementation.

Sustainable political dialogue is still crucial for the country. Therefore, I want to appeal to Albanian politicians to make efforts and address the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations before the upcoming elections. The elections are important test for functioning democratic system and mature political culture. I hope that the elections will be an occasion for the political parties to observe the implementation of the ‘decriminalization law’. It is a chance for new political culture, avoiding nomination of people with criminal past to the public office.

I am glad that Bosnia and Herzegovina achieved tangible progress on EU path in 2016, and would like to congratulate and encourage Bosnian leaders to continue their dedication to the accession process. Special attention should be given to the implementation of the Reform Agenda, reform of judiciary, implementation of Constitutional Courts’ decisions and guaranteeing equality and democratic representation of all citizens of BiH.

I would like to underline that we are committed to the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina and condemn unilateral movements against it. I also welcome the positive trend in aligning BiH’s foreign policy to that of the EU’s CFSP and hope that we will see further alignment in the upcoming months.”
