Since its foundation the European Parliament has tried to actively promote the issues of human rights in relation to third party countries and regions. This comes in many forms: the protection of human rights, the rights of minorities, and the democratic principles in the EU and beyond. These issues are discussed in the Subcommittee for Human Rights (DROI).
I have been a member of this Committee during the legislative period of 2009 – 2014. Simultaneously, I served as the rapporteur responsible for the Report on the Annual Report on Human Rights in the World 2012 and the European Union’s policy on the matter (2013/2152(INI)).
Promotion of human rights remains an important issue and is a major theme in the European Parliament. It is our responsibility to contribute to the spread of universal principles. EU member states should follow these principles and be models not only for the candidate countries, but for the world.
