Let's disarm history! Joint statement of MEPs Lunacek, Kukan, Fajon, Fleckenstein, Grammatikakis and Jakovcic

After Tuesday’s (November 15, 2016) presentation of two new workbooks in the European Parliament about history in the SEE countries from 1944-2008  the hosting MEPs – VP Ulrike Lunacek, Eduard Kukan, Tanja Fajon, Knut Fleckenstein, Giorgi Grammatikakis, Ivan Jakovčić – reiterate their delight about this CDRSEE Joint History Project and demand further, also financial, support, f.i. for translations:

„These books represent an important contribution to reconciliation in the region as it is of vital importance to understand history in order to pave the way for our common peaceful and stable future. Schools and education should be used for healing processes, especially in post conflict regions. In times of a return to increased ethnic, national and religious tensions education and schools have to be places where young people learn to accept differences, see diversity as a richness and not a threat, and develop critical thinking.

Therefore we ask the authorities in South East Europe to more strongly engage in this process of self-reflection in order to overcome increasing tendencies of perceiving the other as ‚the enemy‘, and lacking willingness to take responsibility for own actions during conflict.

We also request that such transnational history projects are supported and developed in other regions of the EU.

And we demand from the European Commission to fund translation of the history books in all regional languages because all citizens need to be able to read them, not only those who can read English.“
