MEP Kukan on humanitarian crisis on the Hungarian-Serbian border

In reaction to the crisis on the Hungarian-Serbian border, following the declaration of the state of emergency in Hungary, just a day after the new strict laws entered into force, Eduard Kukan, Chair of the EP-Serbia Delegation, made the following comments:

„The unfolding events on the Hungarian-Serbian border are causing great concern. The situation of refugees trapped on the borders is deteriorating minute by minute and calls for immediate action. Locking down borders to refugees running from war and ping-ponging them between countries is against any European principles, and could lead to a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented calibre. It is appalling that this is happening at the borders of the Union. We bear responsibility. We need to find a common solution together with the Western Balkan countries. I call on the EU and the member states to act swiftly to prevent the humanitarian disaster.“
